President’s Club or Team-Wide Incentive Trip: Which One Fits?
Two formats, two goals. How to decide between an elite President's Club trip and a team-wide incentive trip, and why some companies run both.
Both are incentive trips. Both reward performance with travel. But they do different jobs inside a sales organization, and picking the wrong one for your goal is the most common mistake we see.
President’s Club: a high bar, a small group
President’s Club is for the top performers, usually the top 5 to 10 percent of the sales team by revenue or quota attainment. The group is small, often 10 to 40 people plus guests, and the trip is more premium: better rooms, more private experiences, more time with leadership.
It works when you want to retain your best people. Top reps have options, and a trip they’ve earned, with their spouse, in front of the executive team, is a reason to stay. It also sets a visible target for everyone below the line.
Team-wide incentive trip: a clear bar, anyone can clear it
A team-wide trip rewards everyone who hits a defined number. The group can be 50 to 200 or more. The trip is still hosted and still polished, but the per-person budget is usually lower and the activities are built for scale: beach club takeovers, catamaran days, one big awards night.
It works when you want to lift the whole team’s output, not just the top. In door-to-door and field sales, where the middle of the team drives the number, this format tends to produce more revenue per dollar spent than a Club trip.
How to choose
- Retention problem at the top? President’s Club.
- Need the middle of the team to push? Team-wide.
- New team or new product? Team-wide, with an achievable first-year bar.
- Mature team with established stars? Club, or both.
Running both
Plenty of companies do. A team-wide trip in late winter for everyone who qualified, and a smaller Club trip for the top tier later in the year. The second trip is the reason to keep selling after you’ve already earned the first.
Whichever you choose, announce it early, make the qualifier simple enough to track on a whiteboard, and put the awards night in the itinerary from day one.
We run both formats. See how they differ or tell us about your team.
